1) How will we know we’ve been selected to receive trees?
The Bridging Foundation will send you a confirmation email to notify you when we receive your application.  Please allow 4 to 6 weeks to process your application. When you’ve been formally approved to receive trees, you’ll receive a formal email notification.
Please note additional requirements for corporate applicants:  If you are applying as a business/corporation, it is necessary that the Bridging Foundation clears your application with the U.S. Department of State.  Please allow additional time to process your application.  In addition, businesses/corporations applying for trees must contribute $5,000 for every 50 requested to help defray the costs.

2) Can we request the color of the flowers for the trees we’ll receive?
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee which color of dogwood flower you’ll receive.  Our tree consultant will pick the best tree variety depending on the physical conditions of your planting venue.

3) I understand you have plaques.  Can I receive a plaque for each planting site?
We do have bronze memorial plaques available.  We provide one plaque to applicants who request at least 20 trees.  If you apply to plant trees at more than one venue, but you have less than 100 trees total, you will receive just one plaque.  Additional plaques may be available if requested although quantities are limited and there is no guarantee that additional plaques will be available.  Host institutions are responsible for paying the cost of transporting the plaques from the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo to the planting site or other location.

4) We already know that dogwood trees can grow in our district.  Do we still need to prepare a soil analysis report?
Yes, this is a requirement.  We have several different varieties of dogwood trees, and based on your soil analysis, we will select the tree that is the best match for your climate and soil.  The dogwood tree growing in your area may not be the same type of tree that we have available, so the details of your soil conditions are an important factor in selecting the right tree.  Please read Dogwood: Soil Inspection carefully.

5) Why do the trees have to be planted on publicly accessible land?
These trees are a gift from the people of the United States to the people of Japan.   We want these trees to be in venues where any Japanese, for generations to come, can enjoy the beauty of this symbol of our friendship.

6) Why do you suggest planting the trees in clusters of 20?
Visually speaking, when the trees mature and bloom, they’ll look better as a group than as one or two trees spread out over larger spaces.  Also, we do not have enough plaques to provide you a plaque for each individual site, so putting the plaque and a group of trees together makes a stronger impact.

7) Who is responsible for caring for the trees?  Do you have funds to support maintenance of the trees?
Each host institution is responsible for the maintenance of the trees once they are delivered to the planting site.  We do not have supplementary funds to support the long-term upkeep.

8) How will I receive the trees?
All of the trees are at nurseries in Saitama and other nearby locations.  Your trees will be delivered by special takuhaibin, and can be delivered just before your planting ceremony.  If you prefer to receive your trees well in advance of your planting ceremony, you are welcome to request them earlier. Applicants are responsible for the cost of transporting the dogwood trees domestically, from Saitama to the planting site.

9) Could the Bridging Foundation provide a grant to help defray the costs?
The Bridging Foundation has limited project funds.  Basically receiving institutions should cover the costs of planting, maintenance and any ceremony.
